November is DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH
It is almost November and this month we take the time to raise awareness that Domestic Violence (Intimate Partner Violence IPV) is all around us. When a person lives in fear, threatened with violence - words, actions, physical, financial, emotional or sexual - they are not safe. It happens in EVERY demographic; EVERY age; EVERY gender; EVERY culture, EVERYONE knows SOMEONE.
You may ask, WHY does the victim not leave... WHY DO THEY STAY, WHAT IS WRONG WITH THEM... There is nothing wrong with them, except, perhaps, they do not feel they deserve better. It only happend ONCE; it will not happen again. It was THEIR fault, they are responsible... It happens over time, it builds up, it gets harder to tell someone, to ask for help.
There is fear of judgement, of children being taken away, of being alone, where will they go, how will they live and so much more. The intimidation, the tactics, the lack of self esteem... it all weighs them down. The shame is debilitating... Who will believe them... I lived in an abusive relationship for over 15 years, it took 3 years to get out of it and that was the most terrifying time of my and my childrens lives. Sexual assault, happens in marriages, many women think they have no rights, but THEY DO! There is HELP and resources!
Please help raise awareness. The Were Here For You Project is an ongoing project. Currently we are well stocked with comfort kits and clothing, thank you to all who have helped donate and provide items in the past year. Currently I would like to request the following help. We desperately need Gift Cards or funds to purchase gift cards to give to patients who attend the local Emergency Rooms. The Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners are highly and specially trained to treat people who attend the ER due to sexual assault or domestic violence - many times it is the same situation!
We need gift cards for meals - fast food, groceries, dollarstore for sundries, and especially fuel cards to help the patients (women, men and children) to travel to the ER for help. Lack of money can be enough to STOP someone from approaching the ER or RCMP for help. Please contact us to see how you can help or where to drop off your donations or send e transfers! We will be onsite Nov. 6th at the Fredericton Capital Exhibition Grounds and accepting donations in the way of gift cards and funds or e transfers to donate to the project.

St. Thomas University - Student Union - Donation Drive - Thank you!
We would like to thank the St. Thomas University (STU) Student Union for their donation drive to the We're Here For You Comfort Kit Project! It is good to see them working to help prevent sexual assault with the education in place as well as to support those who have suffered sexual assault. Be sure this is well appreciated and will be used!
